HANDCRAFTED FILMS

Hello, future honeymooners!

Welcome to the 3rd installment on how to capture your honeymoon like a pro! In part 1 we talked all about the things you’ll need to bring with you in order to document your trip. In part 2 we discussed everything you’ll need to know in order to capture amazing photos and videos while on your trip! (If you haven’t had a chance to read parts one and two yet, I highly suggest it!)

Which brings us to today, our third and final installment of the series: how to preserve these memories once you’re home! You’ve just returned from the trip of a lifetime with TONS of amazing photos and videos (thanks to some useful tips ;) ), but now the question becomes… well, now what? What do I do with all of these files?!

We’re going to explore 5 things you can do with your photos but before we jump into the list, I want to make one SUPER important point: whatever you do, make sure you do it RIGHT away! We all know that as soon as you get back from a trip like this, real life hits you like a ton of bricks. Next thing you know it’s three years later and you still haven’t done anything with your photos. So no matter if you do one of these things, or all of them, make sure you act RIGHT AWAY while everything is fresh in your mind and you are motivated to do it!

So with all of that, let’s jump into the 5 things you should do with your photos as soon as you get home:

1) Backup All Your Files

No matter what type of camera you were using, you need to get all your files off of the device and onto the computer! This is especially true if you were using your phone! You want to get the files off the phone so you know where they are and so you don’t lose anything! I suggest picking up a cheap external hard drive like this one from Western Digital, or even a Thumbdrive like this one could be a good solution (just don’t lose it).

You just want to make sure that you know exactly where the files are so you can go back and access them in the future if you need to, and just so you know they are safe.

2) Pick the Best of the Best

Now that all of your images are backed up and in a safe place, it’s time to start sorting! You want to go through and pick out the “best of the best” and put those in a separate folder. You’re inevitably going to have a ton of duplicates, or images that just didn’t turn out. You want to weed those out so you have all of your favorites in one place! This will make things a lot easier when you’re searching for them down the road.

Pro Tip: If your trip was spread out over multiple locations or days, make different folders for each location, or each day so they’re easier to navigate a year from now!

3) Put Together a Slideshow

Friends and family are going to want to hear all about your trip and look through all your fantastic photos! Instead of just sending them a folder of images, you could put together a fun slideshow set to music to make the experience that much better! The fun thing is you can include as many or as few photos as you’d like and this is a great way to share the photos online! There are a ton of websites online you can use to make a free slideshow (like PhotoSnack), or you can use iMovie/iPhoto on a Mac! If you shot video on your honeymoon, you can also make a short film using iMovie if you have a Mac or Windows Movie Maker if you have a PC.

Here’s a great, quick tutorial for iMovie users. And for Windows Movie Maker!

4) Make Some Prints

As newlyweds, it’s 100% socially acceptable to have nothing but photos of the two of you all over your new place! Chances are the only photos you have printed are from your engagement session or wedding. Why not mix it up with some fun honeymoon photos?! You can print a few great photos of the two of you and put them in a special frame OR better yet print some of your favorite non-people photos to use as decorations are your new home!

Pro Tip: Our favorite place to get photos printed online is mpix.com! The quality is amazing but won’t break the bank! Trust me, it’ll be WAY better than getting them printed at Wal-Mart!

5) Make a Photo Book

When Ash and I went on our honeymoon, we knew we’d want to preserve our images in a fun way once we got back home. So we searched around the resort we were staying at before we left, hoping to find some kind of album that we could put our printed photos in. We found this one and now it’s one of our favorite keepsakes!! We followed the tips I mentioned above (backing up our photos immediately and printing them off ASAP) so now this album is actually full of images from our honeymoon instead of just sitting around empty!

Alright friends, there you have it! With these few tips, you’ll be well on your way to preserving your honeymoon memories for a lifetime! I hope you’ve enjoyed this series and as always, feel free to drop us a comment in the comments below if you have any questions! Happy Honeymooning!
